From Caviahue-Copahue in Argentina to Tra Que Vegetable Village in Viet Nam, discover the 55 new Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism.

Rural destinations consolidate their position as key players in sustainable tourism and community development as UN Tourism announces its Best Tourism Villages 2024.

In this fourth edition, 55 villages from all regions received the recognition, chosen from over 260 applications from more than 60 UN Tourism Member States. Another 20 villages were chosen to join the Upgrade Programme.

“Tourism is a vital tool for inclusion, empowering rural communities to protect and value their rich cultural heritage while driving sustainable development,” said UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili. “The Best Tourism Villages initiative not only recognizes the remarkable achievements of these villages but also highlights the transformative power of tourism. By leveraging their unique assets, these communities can foster economic growth, promote local traditions, and enhance the quality of life for their residents. We celebrate the villages that have embraced tourism as a pathway to empowerment and community well-being, demonstrating that sustainable practices can lead to a brighter future for all.”

The Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism initiative was launched in 2021 to advance tourism’s role in rural areas, preserving landscapes, cultural diversity, local values, and culinary traditions. The Best Tourism Villages (BTV) Network grows every year, and with the announcement of its 75 new members, 254 villages are now part of the largest community of rural destinations in the world.

Uniting Rural Destinations for Sustainable Development

The Best Tourism Villages initiative is part of the UN Tourism for Rural Development Programme. The Programme works to foster development and inclusion in rural areas, combat depopulation, advance innovation and value chain integration through tourism, and encourage sustainable practices.

As in previous editions, the villages were evaluated under nine key areas:

  1. Cultural and Natural Resources
  2. Promotion and Conservation of Cultural Resources
  3. Economic Sustainability
  4. Social Sustainability
  5. Environmental Sustainability
  6. Tourism Development and Value Chain Integration
  7. Governance and Prioritization of Tourism
  8. Infrastructure and Connectivity
  9. Health, Safety, and Security

The initiative comprises three pillars:

  • Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism: Recognizes outstanding rural tourism destinations with accredited cultural and natural assets, a commitment to preserving community-based values, and a clear commitment to innovation and sustainability across economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
  • Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism Upgrade Programme: Supports villages on their journey to meet recognition criteria, helping them improve in areas identified as weakness during evaluation.

The event is set to take place at the Bali International Convention Center (BICC) along with several other venues across Bali. It is expected to draw around 30,000 attendees from 172 countries.

The forum will host 290 sessions focusing on vital water-related topics, including water security and prosperity, the interrelation of water with human and natural needs, disaster risk reduction and management, and aspects of governance such as cooperation and hydro diplomacy. The anticipated outcomes of the forum include the development of new solutions and commitments aimed at achieving sustainable and equitable water management practices.

The thematic track will delve into six critical areas: ensuring water security and prosperity; balancing water needs for humans and nature; enhancing strategies for disaster risk reduction and management; advancing governance, cooperation, and hydrodiplomacy; promoting sustainable water finance; and fostering knowledge and innovation.

Furthermore, the regional discussions will focus on specific challenges and solutions across four key geographical areas: the Mediterranean, Asia-Pacific, the Americas, and Africa.

The operation, beginning on May 17, will focus on preemptive and preventive strategies to maintain safety throughout the event’s duration.

He added that the Bali Provincial Government had planned from the start to close the Suwung TPA by shifting waste management in the Sarbagita area to the existing TPST and TPS3R. However, this is still hampered by waste processing capacity which is not yet optimal. “Previously we expected the Kertalangu TPST to be 400 tons per day but in practice it was only 150 tons, whereas waste production in Bali was 1100 tons per day for Sarbagita (Denpasar, Badung, Gianyar, Tabanan. ed),” he said.

Meanwhile, Sungai Watch Founder Gary Bencheghib said Sungai Watch is a non-profit organization/foundation that focuses on stopping the rate of plastic waste before it enters the sea by cleaning rivers by installing rubbish nets. Apart from cleaning activities, the organization also provides education and outreach to the surrounding community.

“We have identified more than 350 illegal dumpsites in Bali. We are trying to clean up all these illegal open dumpsites through weekly and emergency cleaning, but in the future we want the involvement of the District Government in curbing the increasingly mushrooming illegal landfills,” he concluded .

SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS IN INDONESIA

Over 40 hotels in Indonesia created hydroponic Herb Gardens to supply signature restaurants with fresh herbs and salads. Over the last year, W Bali – Seminyak managed to source at least 15% of their fresh produce ingredients in procurement value from its on-site garden, which produces fresh fruits and vegetables, microgreens, herbs, and edible flowers.

Some of other hotels that have its own on-site garden are The St. Regis Bali Resort, Nusa Dua; Sthala, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Ubud Bali; Yogyakarta Marriott Hotel; Renaissance Bali Nusa Dua Resort; The Mayflower, Jakarta – Marriott Executive Apartments; Courtyard by Marriott Bandung Dago; Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa; The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali; Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve; Aloft Bali Seminyak; The Ritz-Carlton, Bali; Four Points by Sheraton Batam; and more.

The Westin Jakarta partners with Bluebird Group to provide guests with a sustainable and luxury car ride. Using BMW iX and Hyundai IONIQ, guests can navigate across the city, and including to and from the airport. The electric vehicle produces zero carbon emissions. Sheraton Bandung Hotel & Towers has also installed Electronic Vehicle Charging Station in the hotel’s premises.

In collaboration with the Nusa Dua Reef Foundation, The St. Regis Bali Resort takes part in conservation efforts by the local community to provide new homes for reef life and encourage coral growth. Under the guidance of knowledgeable marine professionals, divers of all experience levels are welcomed to descend into the unparalleled tranquillity of the deep, exploring the abundant sea life while gaining a deeper understanding of the coral reef.

Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort reduces its food waste by composting surplus foods in confined areas to decay via natural biological processes, yielding healthy compost to be used for growing greens at the Chef’s Garden. These greens will be used as ingredients in food and beverages served at the resort. Sthala, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Ubud Bali adapts the waste disposal system of Balinese ancestors and install “Modern Teba” that utilizes bacteria to speed up the process of decomposing organic waste.

Various Marriott International Portfolio of Hotels and Resorts are partnering with external institutions to support the community and reduce food waste by distributing surplus food to those in need. Some of the hotels that participates in this programme are Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa; Four Points by Sheraton Jakarta, Thamrin; Four Points by Sheraton Bandung; W Bali – Seminyak; The Laguna, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Nusa Dua, Bali; Le Meridien Bali Jimbaran; and more.

In 2018 Marriott International announced to remove single use plastic straws and plastic stirrers across all hotels around the world. The company is estimated to eliminate the use of more than 1 billion plastic straws per year. In 2019 the company announced plans to replace tiny, single-use toiletry bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel in guestroom showers with larger, pump topped bottles.

The Laguna, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Nusa Dua, Bali and The St. Regis Bali Resort are partnering with Biosystems Indonesia to produce pure, refreshing drinking water with a pH level of 7.19 using a process known as Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO), passing water through a nano-membrane ultra-filtration system. The sustainably sourced glass bottles are then sanitized through a high-pressure ozone and UV light process, effectively eliminating all biological contaminants. The highly efficient system allows the plant to refill 10,000 bottles a day, as well as providing the option to make sparkling water.

Marriott International invites its employees, partners, and stakeholders to join in this collective effort to drive positive change in the world. Together, they will be instrumental in ensuring that Marriott’s Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction initiative continues to make a meaningful impact on global sustainability.
